Football is a game of emotions.  With emotions, they can sometimes spark fighting.  What happened yesterday at Reliant Stadium in Houston was something that no one had ever seen in a football game, not even Antonio Pierce, former Linebacker for the Washington Redskins and Giants was quoted earlier on SportsCenter saying, “In all my years in playing football, I’ve never seen a fight like that.”

Conflicts between WR Andre Johnson, of the Houston Texans and CB Cortland Finnegan, of the Tennessee Titans have been going on dating back to last season.  On September 30, 2009, something similiar, but not as violent erupted between the two Pro Bowlers.  This resulted in a fine induced to Andre Johnson for $7,500 for pulling on Cortland Finnegan’s facemask.

What looked to occur yesterday was Cortland Finnegan got “under the skin” of Andre Johnson which resulted in a bit of scrummage but then on the ensuing drive, a fight broke out between Andre Johnson and Cortland Finnegan.  This resulted in both helmets flying, flags thrown, and what appeared to be two or more punches landed by WR Andre Johnson on opposing CB Cortland Finnegan’s face and head.

Cortland Finnegan is known to irritate opposing players.  Even former Head Coach Tony Dungy commented on the Titans for being known as a dirty team saying, “I always warned my players, ‘You have to keep your cool, especially against Cortland Finnegan. He’s going to try to get on your nerves.”

Both players were ejected in the 4th quarter of the game, and afterwards Andre Johnson apologized saying, “I would like to apologize to the organization, our owner, and my teammates. What happened out there today was not me. I just lost my cool and I wish that I could take back what happened, but I can’t. It’s over and done with now. I’m pretty sure that I’ll be disciplined for it.” This is assuming he will receive a fine or possible suspension which could impact fantasy owners if he is indeed suspended, but this is HIGHLY unlikely.

The game ended with the Texans winning enroute to a 20-0 win over the Tennessee Titans.  These teams will meet once more before the season is over.
