Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that while San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates returned to practice on Thursday, there is still no certainty that he’ll be available to play Sunday for the Bolts’ showdown with the Indianapolis Colts.

Gates is dealing with a foot injury (for those scoring at home, it’s a torn plantar fascia) that kept him out of the Chargers came against the Broncos last week. He had practiced last Wednesday, only to be so sore the following day that he couldn’t even walk on the treadmill — so how he responds Friday could determine his status for Sunday.

The statuses of fellow hobbled pass-catchers Malcom Floyd and Legedu Naanee aren’t 100 percent certain yet, either, which means that quarterback Philip Rivers could rely even more heavily on wide receiver Vincent Jackson in his 2010 debut.
